I find subject matter expertise inspirational. As we progress in our careers, we’re given frequent opportunities to expand our intellect and abilities in a way that fulfills us both personally and professionally.

Yet time and time again organizations are held back by fundamentals that can’t be rectified by even the most authoritative subject matter expertise.

I think we’d be well served to remember that we’re all in the “human action business”, because all strategies are ultimately designed and executed by people. We often associate with this principle from an external perspective because it is so closely linked to marketing and sales and how organizations attract and support clientele. But it also applies internally in how we work as individuals, within our teams and across broader departments. I believe that many organizations struggle with the right balance while serving both aims.

How often do we engage to more deeply understand, improve upon and leverage this fundamental truth within our teams and organizations?

Or do we perhaps take this important driver of our effectiveness for granted while we delve further into the granularity of our expertise?

How does your organization approach the duality of “human action” in its business? And is the approach balanced or does it have a bias internally or externally?
