If You Can't Articulate It, It Doesn't Exist

Far too often there is a disconnect between what we think and what we say. My thoughts often trick me into believing that their mere existence is all that’s required in order for them to play out in my life. For example, let’s say I think about business strategy - my mind tells me I’ve got it all figured out, culminating with the warped implication that the strategy will automatically ensue. In reality, I don’t have it figured out. All I have are ideas in my head. Ideas that I haven’t even said out loud. Saying it out loud makes it real. Putting thoughts to words for yourself and others is often more challenging than our fleeting minds can tolerate. I’m reminded of this often - all I have to do is take something that has done 50 laps in my head and attempt to give it words that would guide someone else’s complete comprehension of my idea. The first attempt is often awkward and searching and that’s the trap, because in my mind I was convinced I had it nailed down in compelling fashion. Don’t let your thoughts delude you into the false confidence that you have ownership and spoken command of your beliefs and priorities. My life began to have more meaning and effectiveness when I developed the discipline to clearly articulate my most important thoughts. “If you can’t articulate it, it doesn’t exist.” is the standard I set for myself. What’s in your head that needs to receive your words?
